EPDM Roofing

EPDM Roofing: What You Need To Know

Roofing is a complex industry that is in high demand. Every building structure must have a roof to keep it dry and comfortable. While many property owners do not give much thought to their roofs, it is crucial to know as much about it as possible. If you are contemplating replacing your roof or building a home from scratch, you need to determine what type of material will work best for you. There is a broad range of materials utilized in roofing. These materials include metal, clay, asphalt, wood, concrete, and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM).

If you ask any licensed contractor which type of roofing material offers the longest lifespan, the answer will almost always be EPDM. This material is mostly utilized in commercial buildings. However, it will work for any type of a building structure in both the residential and commercial sectors.

EPDM roofing is constructed of durable synthetic rubber. It is more commonly utilized in buildings with a low slope (flat roof) and the United States. Manufacturers combine a variety of ingredients, including propylene and ethylene, to develop their EPDM roofing. The rubbing roofing member covers the roof to create a seal, which will protect the interior from exposure to the outdoor elements.

Single-Ply EPDM

EPDM is available in single-ply, which has a broad range of advantages. These advantages include weather, fire, wind, sun, and heat resistant, extremely durable and easy installation. It will also not crack or become brittle when exposed to low and high temperatures. You cannot go wrong with an EPDM roofing, especially if you own commercial property. In the long run, you could save a lot of money, time, and grief because EPDM roofing has a lifespan of 15 to 25 years, depending on the construction.

Roll EPDM Roofing

EPDM roofing is very easy to install because it comes in a roll. The installer just rolls the EPDM material out of the roof after applying a generous layer of glue. Once the process is complete, the roof is completely sealed off from the elements. In most cases, roll EPDM roofing can be installed in as little as eight hours, depending on the size of the building structure. Larger structures will take longer but most jobs can be completed in a single day.

Different Thicknesses

EPDM roofing is available in thicknesses ranging from 45 to 90 mil. Depending on your needs and preferences, you may want to opt for the 45 mil thickness. This is the ideal thickness for areas that do not receive a lot of rainfall and snow. Thicknesses of 75 and 90 mil are more suitable for building structures that are exposed to heavy snowfall, direct sunlight, heavy winds, and damaging weather conditions.

EPDM Roofing Layers

EPDM roofing consists of four layers, including the top layers known as FlexWhite and FRM EPDM, AFR EPDM (fire retardant layer), and the elastrometric bottom layer.
